What people say on the drive home.
Golfers, couples, and families come up the mountain for a weekend and leave planning the next trip. Here is what they told us, in their own words.
Six weekends, six stories.
A round in the firs, a soak by the fire, a long dinner by the water. Every stay finds its own rhythm.
Walked all eighteen with a caddie who knew every roll of every green. The firs do the talking out there. Best round I have played in Oregon, hands down.
The cedar sauna and the warm soaking pools after a cold morning on the river. I did not check my phone for two days and I did not miss it.
Dinner at the Rivergrass ran three unhurried hours and none of us wanted it to end. The coal-buried beets alone are worth the drive up US-26.
Booked a cabin with the wood stove for our anniversary. Rain on the roof, coffee on the porch, the river right there. Quiet in the best way.
Brought the kids for the par-3 short course and a burger at the Salmon Tavern. Muddy boots welcome, twelve taps for the grownups. Perfect family day.
Small on purpose is exactly right. Never waited on a tee, never fought for a lounge chair. It felt like the whole place was ours for the weekend.
We came for a golf weekend and stayed for the mountain.
The full story
My husband is the golfer, so I will admit I came up to Welches mostly for the spa and the quiet. We booked a river-view suite for two nights in early October, right when the vine maples were turning. Eddie played the river course both mornings and came back each time saying it was the most fun he had walking in years, that the routing from 1928 makes you think instead of just swing hard.
While he golfed, I took the cedar sauna, then the warm mineral pools, then a massage in a room that honestly smelled like the forest floor. On the second afternoon we met at the Rivergrass for a long dinner. Chef writes the menu that morning, so we let the courses come slow, ordered a bottle from the Willamette Valley, and watched the light leave the firs through the windows. Somewhere around the marionberry cobbler we quietly canceled our Sunday plans and asked the front desk for one more night.
What stayed with me was how unhurried the whole place feels. Tee times spaced out, the dining room never rushed, staff who remembered our names by the second morning. It does not feel like a hotel. It feels like a very good cabin that happens to have a championship course out back. We are already booked for our anniversary next spring.
