About 75 minutes east of Portland.
From Portland, take US-26 east toward Mount Hood. The highway climbs gently through Sandy and Gresham, then narrows into the old-growth corridor past Zigzag and Rhododendron. Watch for the Welches turnoff, take East Salmon River Road, and follow it along the water until the firs open onto the lodge. On a clear day it is a beautiful drive, roughly 55 miles, that most guests do in a little over an hour.
Coming from the east through Hood River, follow OR-35 south to US-26 and drop into Government Camp, then continue down the mountain about 20 minutes to Welches. Winter travelers should carry chains from November through March, since the pass can see snow even when the valley is clear.
